I graduated with a degree in English literature from London University in 1984. Like many college graduates in the U.K., I certainly didnt feel ready for the world of work and spent the next two years working in France in the winter and playing in Greece during summer, with a pair of increasingly concerned parents! In 1986 I was offered a job teaching French teenagers in the U.K. As a French speaker, I thought this would be a breeze. I learned a lot, got another teaching job in London teaching multilingual groups and finally trained to teach EFL at the end of that summer. My first posting took me to Istanbul, Turkey, for a year, my second to Madrid, Spain, for a further two. This was fun! I wondered, is teaching to be my career? I then took another year out and traveled around India and Southeast Asia, ending up in Australia. On the way, there were many experiences, including teaching in a variety of contexts and situations. I was hooked. Back in the U.K. in 1991 I got involved in Teacher Training, which I found immensely enjoyable. I began working as a tutor on The University of Cambridges Certificate in English Language Teaching (CELTA) courses, becoming the Head of Teacher Training at St Giles, Highgate. Along the way, I had my two little boys, and my writing work has fitted in beautifully with being at home little a bit more. Hope you enjoy the course! |
